Everyone has heard of garlic. Famous mostly for its strong distinctive smell, it seams that this little plant has many uses. It is used for both medical and culinary purposes and its’ effects seem to perform wonders on both our food and our health. No one really knows where garlic came from.

It is thought only to have appeared in southwestern Asia but this is not a proven fact. Garlic is a species from the onion family called Alliaceae and it is related to the onion, leek and shallot. The most commonly used part of the garlic is the bulb.

Throughout history, garlic has been known to represent good but also evil, depending on the culture. I personally know garlic to be on the side of good. I mean, who does not know that garlic was used in order to chase away vampires, demons and other evil spirits? Is there a movie out there about vampires that does not feature a garlic involvement?

I do not think so. On the other hand, garlic was thought to be evil due to its’ curative abilities for people with infections. Infections usually left people with mental illnesses and delusions and thus it was though, that because they used garlic to cure infections, it must surely be connected with evil. I mean no God’s plant could cure such frightening diseases. However, although categorized as an evil plant, garlic was still used I order to cure infections.

Nowadays garlic is used for culinary purposes because of its’ savories taste but also for medical purposes I must admit that I have heard before that garlic is good for ones health but I never really knew its exact health benefits. So, let us find our right now: what are the health benefits of garlic?

Garlic is a powerful natural antibiotic and it is considered  a “wonder drug” because of its’ curative properties .If you crush the garlic, you will discover the following beneficial substances: allicin, phytoncide, minerals, vitamin B, fluorides, proteins and much more. Allicin is a powerfull antibiotic and phytoncide is an anti-fungal compound.

Garlic also has anti-oxidative effects, anti-tumor effects and anti-microbial effects.Allicin seems to be effective against 23 types of bacteria.Garlic was also used during the Worl War 1 in order to treat wounds.Today, garlic is also distributed to elderly people as a vitamin ntriet for the prevention of strokes. As you can see, garlic is actually a real health fountain and although many of you may not appreciate its’ taste and flavor, it is definitely something we should eat, if not on a daily basis, at least just once a week. Garlic may also have cancer-fighting abilities and can effectively reduce high levels of cholesterol. Although attributed with the epithet “stinky rose “garlic is living proof that good and healthy things do not always come in fancy boxes. So, what are the health benefits of eating garlic?
