Some studies, according to the MayoClinic, reported that yoga can calm children, reduce obesity, improve concentration and help children manage certain health conditions, such as headache and irritation of the colon syndrome.
Studies show that yoga can also be beneficial for children with mental and physical disabilities. Moe researches needs to be done of course to ensure the positive effects of yoga for the health of children. However, at least yoga can be an alternative physical activity for children.
Types of yoga that is suitable for children will consist of:
1. Warm Up
Children can lie down or sit cross-legged on the floor or on chairs. Instructor can instruct the child to calm their mind, close their eyes and imagine the problem can be resolved.
Children will be encouraged to focus on breathing in and slowly, and breathing in through their nose. In description, it can be imagined as filling the stomach with air like a balloon and then slowly release the air.
Gentle movement, including stretching, will help children prepare to perform movements that involve standing, sitting, rotate, balance and flex. Some instructors describe it like plants, animals or objects to imitate. In every movement, children are reminded to breathe through their nose, they are not allowed to force themselves and immediately stop if they experience pain.
After completing a series of movements, children are instructed to lie on the floor and close their eyes. Children may also be instructed to visualize the experience, such as lying on a cloud or floating in the sky.
5. Get up
As the end of the training, children are instructed to begin stretching their body and slowly get up from the floor.

Not all yoga movements are suitable for children. There are two movements that may be unsuitable for children that includes:
One type of motion which is also called power yoga. This movement focuses on strength and flexibility training and quick movement. Ashtanga practice requires very good physical condition.
Commonly called hot yoga, Bikram involves strong movement in a heated room up to 100-110 F (38-43 C). Bikram practice also requires very good physical condition.
Is there a safe guide for children who practice yoga?
If the child is going to practice yoga, help them to take steps to avoid injury, for example:
1. Find a safe place to practice yoga
Make sure that yoga is done at a flat floor with a comfortable room temperature.
2. Do yoga on an empty stomach
Particular motion can cause the child to vomit if they do yoga almost immediately after eating. In general, do not allow children to practice yoga 2-4 hours after eating a large meal or 1-2 hours after consuming snacks.
3. Do not practice excessively
Remind children to keep the movement slow and do not force a move.
4. Consider the child’s medical condition
If the child has a migraine or a condition that is influenced by excessive pressure on the head or neck, do not do a lot of movement that is centered on the area. Children may also need to be careful in practicing breathing technique or a particular motion if they have asthma, bronchitis or a hernia. Do not allow children to do yoga if they are sick.
How do we choose the type of yoga for children?
If children are interested in yoga, look for a yoga class with instructors who have yoga training for children. Ask the instructor’s experience of yoga for children.
Consider all kinds of conditions before the registering your child, see if if the child will feel comfortable with all the practice, instructors, class size and the environment.
Find a class where the children can still feel happy and able to receive adequate supervision from the instructor. If the child has a medical condition or special needs, be sure to remind the instructor and make sure of their ability to be able to train your children well.
